Seminal British comedian and director Charlie Chaplin died in Vevey, Switzerland, on Christmas Day, 1977 at the age of 88 and buried nearby. Three months later, his body was stolen by a band of Swiss mechanics hoping to extort money from Chaplin’s family, but the criminals were caught and the body found eleven weeks later. Chaplin’s body was buried again, this time under six feet of concrete. Pictured: Chaplin in a promotional shot for The Tramp, 1915.
